Wind
Only winds with a westerly component are clean. All other directions can be gusty.
Waves
This can be a great wave spot with breaks on the outside of the bay to the north and south. There is often a nice wave that wraps around the rocks and into the flat water area. There is also a small beach break.
Warning and dangers
The beach is very narrow and short with rocks at both ends. The rest of the bay is surrounded by rocks.
There are several small harbours in the bay made of large rocks and concrete.
The waves on the outside of the bay can be large and will throw you on the rocks if you mess up.
This spot is not good for beginners.
The flat water spot is very shallow in places with rocks just under the surface.

Our best spot for beginners. Sola is our best spot for beginners. The water is shallow and the waves are normally smaller than anywhere else. It is a short drive from Stavanger. There is a large gravel car park just north of the hotel, with a very short walk to the beach.
Sola beach is right next to Stavanger airport. A large area of the beach and water is regulated by the airport authorities, click here to read more. We are not allowed to kite in this “No kite zone”.

Wind
NW and SW directions are best. West winds can be a lot of fun, but are not ideal for beginners. It is possible to kite on South and North winds but it can be quite gusty.
Waves
On SW swells, the waves at the north end of the beach can be large. This is great for wave riders, but not for beginners. NW swells get broken up by the islands and result in smaller waves than at other spots.
Warning and dangers
Sola is busy in the summer. Be considerate and give way to other beach users. Non kiters don’t understand how your kite works and how dangerous the lines can be. A collision between a kiter and another beach user could result in serious injury. This could lead to more kiting restrictions. Remember, you are an ambassador for the kiting community.
Don’t rig up right at the entrance of the beach. It is better to walk some distance north up the beach, away from the entrance. This prevents the entrance to the beach getting crowded and reduces conflict with other beach users. On a NW wind this also means that beginners can drift down wind further before reaching the “No kite zone”.

Wide beach but watch out for the current. Hellestø is a wide beach with shallow water, but unfortunately it has strong rip currents. There is a large car park.

Wind
Winds with a North component can be very gusty and erratic due to the hills north of the beach.
Waves
Waves along the beach are typical of a beach break. The beach is less sheltered than Sola, so the waves can get large. There is also a reef break to the south end of the beach.
Warning and dangers
The rip currents at Hellestø can be very dangerous, so don’t kite here if you don’t understand them.

There is a small concrete key about 500 meters south of the entrance to the beach and larger rocks around 1km south of the entrance. So on NW winds, beginners should avoid drifting too far and may want to consider starting at North Bore.

Wind
Best on SW. S is really gusty.
WavesWaves
S – SW swells form fantastic waves at the end of the rocks at the south end of the beach. Sometimes they wrap around and it is possible to ride them all the way back to the beach.
W swells will have a large beach break.
Warning and dangers
There are a lot of rocks just under the water at the south end.
At the end of the rocks where the waves rise up, there are some huge boulders that are just under the water. When the waves are big, they become dry as the swell pulls back. Make sure you know where they are before you jump on your first wave, or you will have quite a shock.
On big wave days the rip currents are considerable and dangerous. Don’t kite here on wave days if you don’t understand rip currents.

Waves
If there is wind, there will be waves. Occasionally it is possible to ride some nice waves, but usually the waves are really messy and unpredictable.
Warning and dangers
There are large rocks at the river mouth at the W end of the beach. Beginners should walk a long way east down the beach, so that you have a safe drifting distance to the rocks.
